Travel Photoblog: Bulgaria

For Christimas this past year, we got the opportunity to visit Bulgaria for the festive season. We took a trip with my dad to Borovets Ski Resort in the Rila Mountains for some fresh air, skiing, family fun and a fair few Gluhweins! My dad has spent some time in Bulgaria and always raves about the warm people and some of the beatuiful countryside, so he was excited to show us some of it. The Rila Mountains, where Borovets Ski Resort is situated, are in the southwest of the country and one of the highest mountian ranges in the Balkans. The name 'Rila' apparently comes from the Thracian for '...

14 things moving to London has made me realise...

london
1) ...How strange it is that in a city of 10 million people you can feel totally alone. Before London, the biggest place I had lived was where I was born, and Tallinn has only 500k people living there. That is nothing! Later, Altea in Spain was a tiny tiny village with only 20k people. Because they were quite small places I ended up knowing everyone and even when going out alone I was always guaranteed to meet a friend by accident. I never felt lonely because everyone was so friendly and welcoming. That does not happen in London. And it's fine, here you actually have to make an effort to meet...

Travel: Hong Kong

A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to visit Hong Kong for a wonderful week of exploring the city and I can easily say it is a place that has captured my imagination… The treacle-like air envelopes me, comforting in its heaviness. The lush green sub-tropical trees and mountains contrast against the overcast skies, and driving past the multitude of overwhelmingly high-rise buildings of the city, straining my neck to look up, it reminds me of scene from the 2012 Judge Dredd movie (unusual reference I know!) There are things which stand out for me, in the slow stillness of the air, and...

Full Spanish Maria in da Casa

Over 2015 Bianca and I have slowly been introducing ourselves and Pura Vida to the blogging world. Better slowly than not at all. Am I right, or am I right? We knew that with both of us having new jobs, moving, travels and everyday life to deal with, we couldn’t spend as much time as we would like to on our little Pura Vida website. Then we had some server and website problems and in the end we were hacked too. Over all the difficulties, finally we are moving every day a bit closer to our goals and hopefully by the beginning of 2016 I will reach the "present" Pura Vida time, as I have been...

11 things that changed when I moved from Estonia to Spain

1) I stopped being so irritated about everything that was slow or not working quite so fast, as this is everyday life in Spain. Now, I feel far more relaxed and understanding about these things. Mañana, mañana... 2) I noticed how cold Estonians really are. When I had friends visiting from Estonia, my local friends called them "Penguins" because they always got a fright when someone kissed them on the cheek for greeting and they were quite shy, quiet and reserved (before the first drinks at least!). 3) At first, I complained about the siesta time, but when I started working in Spain and could...

Part 2 of Maria's Spain: The Visiting Period, A.K.A. Still a Tourist

¡Hola! My Spanish story is divided into four parts, you can read the first part here , and now about the second part: “The Visiting Period, aka. Still a Tourist” 1parents.jpg.jpg Just a month after leaving Torrevieja and thinking Spain was not for me, my parents decided to move to Altea. Interesting... Let's be honest, I didn't need much convincing to go back and check out the new place. Altea was so much nicer, I couldn't stay away. 2beta.jpg My visiting period lasted close to two years, before I actually moved there. In the first year, I flew back and forward 8 times to visit my parents,...

Travel - The Amalfi Coast (La Costiera Amalfitana)

The coastline of the Sorrentine Peninsular, known as the Amalfi Coast, is just south of Naples in the region of Campania, Italy. We recently visited this movie-inspiring backdrop with its lemon groves dating back to Roman times, and colourful hill towns overlooking the aquamarine Tyrrenhian sea. You can read about our bucket-list trip along this coastline, the wonderful places we stayed, the food we ate, and the limoncello of course! When I was about 12 years old I watched the movie Only You , with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Junior. I will never forget the scene where Marisa Tomei,...
